Education Loan for MBBS Abroad: Costs, Lenders and Documents for US, UK, Australia & Canada
Complete guide to education loans for studying medicine in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. Covers total cost, SBI, ICICI, HDFC Credila, Prodigy Finance and MPOWER loan limits, collateral rules, documents, interest rates and common rejection mistakes. Updated for 2026.
Studying medicine in the US, UK, Australia, or Canada is a crore-level decision. The degree is called MD in the US, Canada, and Australia, and MBBS or MBChB in the UK, and the full course costs anywhere from Rs 80 lakh to over Rs 4 crore depending on the country. A loan this large is not arranged like an ordinary education loan. This guide covers what it costs, who lends at this scale, the documents you need, and what gets applications rejected.
What Does Studying Medicine in Western Countries Cost?
The total cost covers tuition, living expenses, insurance, and the full course duration. These are all-inclusive figures for Indian students.
| Country | Degree | Total Cost |
|---|---|---|
| USA | MD (needs a pre-med bachelor first) | Rs 1.25 to 2.5 crore |
| UK | MBBS / MBChB | Rs 2.5 to 3.2 crore |
| Australia | MD (mostly graduate entry) | Rs 1.7 to 4.2 crore |
| Canada | MD | Rs 80 lakh to 2.2 crore |
Two structural points change the funding math. First, in the US and Canada you finish a four-year bachelor degree before the MD begins, so the total timeline and cost are longer than the figure above suggests for a direct entry. Second, these are English-speaking, globally recognised degrees where most graduates stay abroad and practice through USMLE, PLAB, or AMC licensing. Because of that, NEET is not required to study or practice in these countries. It matters only if you plan to return to India and register with the National Medical Commission.
Education Loan Eligibility for Western Medical Studies
For a crore-plus medical degree, lenders look at three things before anything else. Your admission to a recognised and ranked medical school, because the university reputation is the strongest predictor of repayment. Your co-applicant's income and CIBIL score, because the parent or guardian must service the loan. And your collateral, because a loan this large is almost never unsecured at an Indian bank.
- Confirmed admission to a recognised medical school (US MD, UK MBChB, Australian or Canadian MD)
- Co-applicant (parent or guardian) with stable income and CIBIL 700+
- Property or fixed deposit to pledge, for loans above Rs 7.5 lakh
- Strong academics, including MCAT, UCAT, or GAMSAT scores where the university requires them
- NEET only if you intend to practice in India after returning

How to Fund a Crore-Level Medical Degree
Indian public banks fund these degrees at the lowest rates, but they need collateral and a strong co-applicant. NBFCs are faster and more flexible. International lenders like Prodigy Finance and MPOWER need no collateral and no co-signer at all, but they charge more and lend in foreign currency.
| Lender | Max Loan | Interest Rate | Collateral Needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI (Global Ed-Vantage) | Up to Rs 3 crore | 8.50 to 10.50% | Yes above Rs 7.5 lakh |
| ICICI Bank | Up to Rs 3 crore | 10.75 to 11.50% | Yes above Rs 50 lakh |
| HDFC Credila (NBFC) | Up to Rs 2 crore | 9.50 to 13.50% | Optional up to Rs 75 lakh |
| Prodigy Finance (International) | Up to $220,000 | 10.74%+ variable | No |
| MPOWER (International) | Up to $100,000 | 9.99%+ fixed | No |
Indian banks and NBFCs suit families who own property and have a co-applicant with income. For a closer look at how the two Indian routes differ on speed, limits, and cost, see our banks vs NBFCs guide.
Prodigy Finance and MPOWER are a different model. They underwrite your future earning potential, not your family's assets, so they need no co-signer and no collateral. Prodigy covers medicine at its supported universities in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Europe, lending up to USD 220,000 at a variable rate from 10.74 percent plus a one-time administration fee of around 4 to 5 percent. MPOWER covers only US and Canadian medical schools, up to USD 100,000, at a fixed rate from about 9.99 percent. MPOWER's cap is a top-up, not full funding, for a US MD that can run past USD 300,000.
Documents Required for a Western Medical Education Loan
- Admission letter or I-20 (US), CAS (UK), or CoE (Australia) from the medical school
- Full fee structure and cost of attendance letter
- Bachelor degree and transcripts for MD and graduate-entry programs
- MCAT, UCAT, or GAMSAT score where the school required it
- Passport and student visa
- Co-applicant KYC, income proof, and 6 month bank statements
- Collateral documents for secured loans (property papers, FD receipts)
For foreign lenders like Prodigy and MPOWER, you skip the parent income proof and property papers entirely. They ask only for your admission offer, academic transcripts, English test scores, and passport.
Interest Rates, Margin Money and Repayment
Interest runs from 8.5 percent at SBI to 15 percent or more at NBFCs and international lenders. On top of interest, Indian banks charge margin money, typically 10 to 15 percent of the cost above Rs 4 lakh, which you fund from your own savings before the bank releases its share.
Two cost traps apply to foreign lenders. Their loans are denominated in US dollars, so a weakening rupee raises your effective repayment over time. And Section 80E tax deduction on interest applies only to Indian bank and NBFC loans, not to Prodigy or MPOWER. That lost deduction alone can add lakhs over the loan term. Learn the full interest and subsidy picture in our education loan interest subsidy guide.
Repayment follows a moratorium. You pay nothing, or only interest, during the course plus 6 to 12 months after. Then the amount converts to EMIs over up to 15 years for Indian lenders, or 7 to 20 years for international lenders. Unpaid interest during the moratorium is added to the principal, which is why a Rs 1.5 crore loan can grow noticeably before your first EMI. For the full EMI math and prepayment rules, read our education loan repayment guide.
Mistakes That Get Western Medical Education Loans Rejected
- Underestimating the pre-med requirement. US and Canadian MD programs need a four-year bachelor degree first. If your budget only covers the MD, you are short by four years of tuition and living costs.
- Assuming the full MD is funded unsecured. Indian banks need collateral above Rs 7.5 lakh. MPOWER caps at USD 100,000, which does not cover a full US MD. Line up collateral or a combination of lenders before you accept the offer.
- Weak co-applicant CIBIL. For secured loans, a co-applicant score below 700 pushes the rate up or stalls the file. Check it three months early.
- Ignoring forex risk with foreign lenders. A Prodigy or MPOWER loan is repaid in US dollars. Budget for rupee depreciation or the effective cost rises every year.
- Missing the Section 80E difference. Interest on foreign lender loans gets no tax deduction. On a crore-plus loan, that is lakhs in lost tax savings over eight years.

FAQs
Questions from this guide
What happens to my education loan if my student visa is rejected?
You only lose the small processing fee, not the full loan amount. The bank releases funds only after the visa is approved, so no EMI or interest is charged on undisbursed money. Your collateral documents are returned once you withdraw the application.
Can I prepay my education loan early without a penalty?
Yes. RBI rules mean Indian banks charge no prepayment penalty on floating-rate education loans. You can pay extra at any time to cut the principal and reduce total interest.
Can someone other than my parent be a co-applicant?
Yes. A working spouse, sibling, or earning relative can be a co-applicant where the bank allows it. Their income and CIBIL score are checked the same way a parent's would be.
Should I apply for the loan before or after getting admission?
You can apply once you have a confirmed or provisional offer. Banks often issue a conditional sanction letter early so you can show proof of funds for the visa.
Do I need to show living-cost funds like Canada GIC or Australia funds separately
Yes, some countries require separate proof of living expenses, such as Canada's GIC or Australia's funds requirement. Your loan can cover these, but you must arrange the specific deposit that country demands.
